When a video call opens the Bluetooth headset microphone, playback often drops from high-quality stereo to narrowband call audio, or brief pops appear at the switch. This usually happens because a classic Bluetooth headset switches audio profile when its microphone is opened.

Quality drop on the headset microphone

A2DP provides high-quality stereo playback but no microphone. When the headset microphone is used, the device switches to HSP/HFP, which supports two-way audio at lower quality. Playback that was going through the same headset then sounds thin or distorted. If playback quality does not change when the headset microphone is enabled, no action is required.

High-quality playback without the headset mic

The headset stays on high-quality playback when the call uses a different microphone.
  • Set the call input to the laptop or phone built-in microphone, or to another wired or USB microphone.
  • Use wired headphones for both playback and the microphone.
After changing the input device, confirm that playback stays in high-quality stereo.
